My Big Brother

My Big Brother

A Story by charles_duane
"

This is a short story that emphasizes the love that a big brother has for his siblings. Are you a good sibling?

"

A careless whisper echoed throughout the night time sky, the cold breeze of a mid autumn night danced almost endlessly with the branches of the willow tree outside my window. Constant formations of eerie shadow figures invited themselves into my bedroom. They always seem to be having a private play on my walls if you will, however, it's probably just my imagination. I sat up in bed for about five minutes before he walked in. "Come on Rock! Mom says you have to take me with you, wherever you go today!" I'm not going to lie, it pissed me off that my mom didn't even ask me if I had plans or not, my little brother always wants to hang out with the big boys. He's already startin' on my nerves, sheesh! His name is Xavier, but everybody just calls him "X" for short... Too bad I can't "X" him out of my plans for the day, oh well,I guess these are the responsibilities of a big brother & a good role model.

I hopped out of the shower and got dressed for the day, the smell of eggs and bacon sailed throughout the house, "Is that you cooking little bro?" I tried to sound the least bit surprised, he's good for making anything into a competition. "Yeah bro, I cooked me and you some, mommy told me to just cook the rest of the eggs and bacon and split it with you." I didn't even know he could cook, now I feel bad for not wanting to spend time with him, I guess I'll just let him choose what we do today. "So little bro, today me and you are going to do whatever you have in mind, I'm sorry we haven't spent more time together. His facial expression went from a smile, to neutral, no words played a part in his response. "Lets go ride bikes up and down that hill that y'all always go to."

Before I could try to convince him to change his mind to something different, preferably something more safe, he was on his bike and speeding towards the hill. I hopped on my bike and yelled out while peddling, "Slow down X! You don't understand why I never let you on this hill, people have died before, I don't think it's safe for you just yet." I might as well have been talking to myself because X was nearing the hill quickly, I doubt he heard a word I said, you could feel his excitement but I knew in my heart this whole thing was destined for disaster. I sped up on my bike and finally caught up to my little brother, "Listen! This hill is far to dangerous for you to be going down, we can pick a different hill or something, cool?" But like they say, in one ear and out the other, he went anyways.

I rushed after him, my blood boiling because that's the second time being ignored today, he didn't even notice the approaching SUV in the distance. I peddled as fast as I could, I finally caught up to him, however, I had to make a split decision. The SUV was approaching the corner so fast that there'd be no way that he would even see my brother before impact, not that he was paying anymore attention then the driver was anyways. So without thinking, I bumped the side of X's bike, forcing him to the outside of the road. There was no time for me to maneuver out of the way of the oncoming SUV, a bright flash of light and a horrible thud, I knew it was over. I died a hour later at the hospital, my little brother never left my side, I couldn't be more proud of him. He promised to speak at my funeral, I told him I wouldn't miss it for the world, I kept that promise.

"Hello, my name is Xavier Prince. My big brother was one of a kind, very extraordinary. I woke up this morning with an unbelievable sense of guilt. However, during my brother's last moments, he reassured me that it wasn't my fault and that he's just grateful that it's him instead of me. Words cannot express the love my big brother has for me, and all of the family, it is beyond unconditional. Lastly, as his head rested in my arms on that hospital bed, and although he knew that death was imminent for him, he conjured up enough energy to tell me this." "Ay little brother, I'm sorry that I'm not able to get up from this. And since I won't be around to guide you, I need you to remember this and engrave it into your heart to remember forever. Most importantly, right now you are a young man, to become a good man, you have to make rational decisions and know when to drop the crowd you're in once you notice they're headed in a negative direction that will bring you down at moments notice. And above all else, protect your family, never forget that although I wont be around physically, I will always be around spiritually. I love you so much little brother, I'll see you in the funny papers."

After those words were spoken to me, he passed away. My big brother gave up his life to save mine. There will never be a day that goes by that I won't remember him. A lot of people have older or younger brothers in their life, but one thing for sure and two things for certain, nobody has a heart like my big brother and nobody loved me more. " I'll see you in time brother, rest easy and thanks again, I love you."

"GoodBye"

I never ignore grammar problems. But I didn't see any here. It's well written. Touching story about a big brother and a legacy; you know the little brother is never going to forget.
