MAN IN THE GLASS

MAN IN THE GLASS

A Poem by charles Jenkins

When you get what you want

in your struggle for self

and the world makes

you king for a day

just go to the mirror

and take a look at yourself

and see what the man

has to say

for it isn't your

father, mother, or wife

who's judgement

upon you must pass

the person's who's verdict

counts most in your life

is the one staring

back from the glass

some people say your

a straight shooting chum

and call you

a wonderful guy

but the man in the glass

say's your only a bum

if you can't look him

in the eye

you may fool

the whole world

through your pathway of years

and get pat's on the back as you pass

but your final reward

will be heartaches and tears

if you cheated

the man in the glass.

in my opinion, reads bumpy and blotchy, although the idea is great and i like the sentimental feeling,
i think the form could use an intentful redraft focusing on line breaks and spacing,
its a great poem and has tremendous working potential, thanks for sharing your talent.

Damn! Truer words and all that . . . you expressed the idea very well.

This is well versed and fluid. We should all tape this to our own mirrors and read it every day. I loved it. Great work!

Very awespiring, yeah, I meant what I just said and inspiring as well. I loved your play on words, I loved how each line kept you glued to the page awaiting the next. Great write and it's all very deep indeed. I love this type of poetry that lets you go there, within yourself.

"To thine own self, be true" applies here, I think. A lot of people are dishonest with themselves, but I don't understand how they can do it. Maybe they don't own a mirror. A fine piece of introspective and wise writing, Charles.
