Breaking Pretty

Breaking Pretty

A Poem by Jessica Lynn Polley

You know it was not hard to make her crack...
just a little pressure here and there,
a little flaunting what she lacks...
stripping her down and showing her bare.

What is inside was ugly,
all the makeup made up was lies.
Now naked, broken, and raunchy...
there is no where that she can hide.

You see you can not just scratch the surface,
the dirt is always set in deep...
rendering something so beautiful worthless,
when you stop to really see.

The lies swimming behind something pretty,
something shiny to distract the eye...
but it is all just wordless and empty,
a way to mask all of the lies.

So crack open all of the fake that she has on...
reveal what is underneath,
the ugly may feel wrong...
but it is real and it is what we need.

So what if she is torn up?
Why does she get to hide?
We package a wreck in pretty paper?
Shove all the nasty bits inside?

We all have to stop living this way!
Truth is...pretty is just not real!
Stop looking, and listen to what I say...
stop searching and start to feel...

I am so tired of playing pretend.
I am so sick of so much fake.
I am ready for all of lies to end.
I am ready for all of the pretty to break.

The sooner we accept the ugly...
the sooner we will truly live
Accept all of the hard things you see...
just love the girl for what she is.

We all have so many cracks,
and you know we all bleed red.
We all live knowing the facts that...
sooner or later we will all be dead.

Secrets are simply worthless,
and they will tear you up inside...
making everything meaningless...
leaving life cracked and dry

So paint it with imperfections,
leave the paint wet and thick...
come forth with all of your confessions,
love the ugly truth for what she is.

Interesting thoughts, and well said. Telling pretty lies is only fun for a while. Sooner or later, ugly truths must come to surface. Finding acceptance of who you are is true beauty. Great poem.
