A Story by chance2

The pre-dawn sky slowly brightened to the east as yellow and orange radiated from the top of the mountain horizon. A small valley in the reaches of Elderbale was just Awaking to the first rays of sunshine. A pecking bird dug violently into a tree, trying for breakfast, Deer ran through the grass with their young and even the grass itself seemed alive as a faint breeze softly blew across the surface of the land. Almost everything was in the ordinary; the valley had been the same for a hundred years with only minor changes. Though the place had a peaceful tranquility, at its reaches was wrongness.

There was something that was not only hidden by time but hidden with dire   purpose.

Stone crumbled as a large limb of an oak sent a thundering “crack” through the valley and crashed down. A ruin of stone littered the ground and every animal in the valley stood still. The stone looked like it had once belonged to a shrine but it was pitted now, with cracks and holes in all of the remaining solid pieces. A raspy cough came from under the ruble. A hand came forth and pulled the frail body behind it out from the debris. The figure stood wobbling and fell back down to the ground. Eyes watched from the trees and behind bushes. He was dressed in a white cloth tunic and fur lined leather boots. His eyes searched desperately. His vision blurred and as he lost conciseness he heard the voice again, assuring him he would fail.

Something wet crossed the mans face and he awoke with a rough jolt. A large dog stood looking down at him with its tongue hanging out. He sat up putting his hand to his head. It was still pounding. “Jade, where are you? Come on girl,” a woman’s voice called out. The dog barked in reply as The woman walked out to find her.

As she saw the man sitting there she jumped. “Hello, who are you,” the woman asked.

 “Me, I don’t; I’m sorry I don’t remember. I don’t remember much of anything.”

“Oh, well. That’s unfortunate.” She sounded like she thought he was lying.

She studied him for a second. “You don’t remember anything…?”

  “No.”

“Well you look like you could use something to eat. Why don’t you come with me, I’m sure my husband wouldn’t mind helping out someone in need. My name is Allieandra , what is… what would you like to be called?

“uhhh, thank you but I cant accept your offer. I can’t explain it but, I feel like I am supposed to go somewhere.” Allieandra gave a small grin. “yes, don’t we all… well have it as you wish, but its hard to travel when your skin and bone. His stomach rumbled as he thought of a real meal. “Well, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt waiting one day before I go.”

“Good, we should get going. I had come to go foraging for greens but it looks like I best get back and start breakfast soon. Thom will be done with his chores and he will be hungry .You know, it really is hard to address you properly without a name…”

He tried to think back for a name that sounded right.

“call me, bane.”
