Madam Conductor!A Poem by Charles D. Moorer
Madam Conductor!
By James Rodney Moorer
I can’t remember ever hearing my mother hum a tune in an offbeat moment.
Maybe she never had any, but she has us and perhaps we are the song she sings.
A medley here, a little harmony there, and some unison in a mixed orchestra trying to attain symphony, synergy, or just getting along.
She is a master conductress, conducting the symphony of time and life, coaxing the lows to come out, admonishing the highs to tone it down, putting in check the stray note.
No piece of paper conferred could make it more so or less.
Her fingers were as deft with the baton as the belt.
Sometimes a song is wayward, sometimes winsome,
but always full of notes to be fine tuned and brought to fruition.
And yet still she conducts.
The song is never finished.
Even as it nears crescendo, it is being rewritten.
