heartburn

heartburn

A Poem by Chad Halle

My heart it burns,
there is a fire inside of me, longing
to escape. Sometimes I worry it
might, and sometimes it does but
is quick to extinquish. I
worry that one day
it will burn this house down, just
like in August of 1979.
My possessions, my writings, what
I would call
my livlihood- all
enflamed. And
my grandmother, looking just
as she must have
nine years before
my birth, would
appear in the smoke-filled hallway.
Questions racing across
my mind as each is answered by
the expression on
her face. I am motionless
until she carries me
to safety. Out
in the rain she disappears as the
structure ablaze, falls behind her. All
while my brother is in
a fire-engine, going to
a call on the other
side of town.
