pass to now

pass to now

A Poem by Tenten
"

the feelings and thoughts you get when reading old pieces even if they are only a year old.

"

do we give up the joy
in the accomplishments of our past
to realize that they are now
only failures in our present
minuscule tasks that translate to
nothing but a small completion
so the awards from then
are not but for a hollow memory

do we give up the joy
we felt on those days
for the understanding
that each step each finish line crossed
meant nothing to no one only
the reflection in the mirror cared
about the new smile created in achievement

or do we keep to cherishing
the little ribbon, now torn childhood dress
all those small treasures
that hold a memory of a
single one-day-at-a-time accomplishment
that gave us that smile
regardless of the world

This poem asks a really interesting question, that I am sure all people who reflect on themselves must ask. What do past accomplishments add up to? A feeling of inadequacy, probably, as one day we must measure up to our past selves and be found lacking. I liked "do we keep cherishing the little ribbon".
