refugee

A Poem by Tenten

Refuge in paper covered walls

Refuge in broken doors

Refuge in a torn mattress

Refuge in a torn blanket

Refuge in this little room

Barely ten feet from you

When I walk out that door

I’ll put on a façade, a mask

I’ll wear another lie

Pretend that I am happy being with you

I’ll become another dismissed child

I’ll become that person you pretend is real

Refuge in paper covered walls

Refuge in broken doors

Refuge in a torn mattress

Refuge in a torn blanket

Refuge in this little room

Barely ten feet from you

There are bare points on the wall

Where my pictures use to hang

You got rid of me that moment I walked

Out that door past the broken gate

Out of your financial pocket book

Out of your dreams of a perfect life

No refuge in paper covered walls

No refuge in broken doors

No refuge in a torn mattress

No refuge in a torn blanket

No refuge in this little room

Barely ten feet from you
