WHAT IF YOU HAD SAID

WHAT IF YOU HAD SAID

A Poem by An owl on the moon
"

Entry for the "What if..." contest...

"

That day,

not too long ago,

a thousand moments,

you felt like walking away;

it hurt to be with me…

And I wanted you happy,

no matter what,

but hoped you’d be happy with me…

So glad you stayed;

that you found a way to smile again…

Can’t imagine my life without you,

I wouldn’t be complete;

would always

be wanting…

What if you had said that leaving me

was all you needed to be happy again?

How could I have held you back?

How could I have kept you

unhappy and caged?

You’re my world;

all I want and need;

yet I want you happy

more than anything…

So what if you had left?

Oh God, what if?

I'm a big fan of the "what if" phrase. The way you use the word is powerful yet sadening; yes, what if that had happened? Your poem really stimulates my thinking. This is what I read between your lines: There is no going back, and no matter how many times we will think 'what if', the world will not change.
Well, that's what I see. I should read this poem often. It really wakes me up to the truth of things. That is why I really love it.

Perhaps the "What If" is exactly where it should be
in the "I couldn't " zone! (smiling)

I love this piece and if it truly is about your special person, I'm beaming with happiness for you!

Gosh Craig you really pours your heart out into this... those difficult choices in life are the ones that always come back to us now and again as we ponder where we are and what would have been. I'd say you are a strong contender to win.
