The
turquoise and topaz heat engulfs me and convulses my lungs. I stride toward the
sea and pause to rest in its cooling embrace. Wind and waves
stroke my hair and face as I listen to the rhythmic drummer.
Freedom’s fable clasps and binds,
the beating wings of noble minds.
A vibrant color is deeply stained,
while darkly painted hues remain.
Grip firm your freedom in your hand,
and watch it slither as the sand.
Now grieve in muted liberty
pain’s fortune-told captivity.
I
sit on the sand and wonder, waiting for the waves to crest.
You have a way with words, especially around the marine habitat. Your ability to transport the reader into a milieu that is salty and oceanic is enviable and your dexterity in weaving in pathos and anguish is admirable. Love the way you've juxtaposed the notion of clutching at sands of time with the loss of freedom without rendering it hackneyed or banal.
Pithy and poetic.
Just the way you intended it, I suppose.
Best,
M.

Born on independence day, freedom has always been a big deal to me. So I was drawn to your title especially, since you're basically calling out the idea of freedom as a farce. And it is. Despite all the vivid imagery in your poem representing freedom, there will always be all the hidden things that bind us. I like how this one is mostly poem with good rhyme & rhythm (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

I think "turquoise and topaz" is a brilliant way to make the reader imagine the hot desert, with the pure turquoise blue sky, and the neverending stretch of sand. Wonderful use of words, as always!

Ah, thank you so much, Moon's fairest daughter.. I always appreciate your insights. :)
Aloha, what beautiful words. I love the way the following made me feel “The turquoise and topaz heat engulfs me and convulses my lungs” to me there’s something very energizing about that sentence, the ocean is an enticing beauty and the scene of many a epic journey. This story feels epic. Great read. Many mahalo.

The ocean inspired this journey, and inspires me still. And though many years since I've been to Maui, I still carry my Hawaiian dictionary. ʻO ka lā e loaʻa iāʻoe ka hauʻoli.
Wonderful use of words and thoughts. I wanted to know and read more. Could be a epic journey dear friend. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.
