Just Me and You

Just Me and You

A Poem by Jeremy Cooney

Just Me and You

by Jeremy Cooney

White couches with plastic sheets in the livingroom

Cardboard boxes with packing tape we'll get to soon

Paint sits open and starts to dry

The neighbor kids are passing by

We're in the back, drowning ourselves in hope and fear

Honey no, there ain't no use in shedding tears

I'm here to stay, I know that you are too

Just me and you

We haven't even hooked up the telephone yet

Half the time we've laid awake in our bed

Internet, computers and TV

Don't seem so important to me

We live this moment as we live our last

We both know life comes at you fast

Rain drums down the window, so blue

Just me and you

Jacks are jumping, queens and aces neck and neck

Someone stole all the suicide kings from the deck

Water's brownish, pipes are old

The furnace leaves us in the cold

We make a fire outta sweet regrets and memories

Incinerate the "What if's" and the "Could've been's"

Realize, through all we've been our love shines through

Just me and you

Supper's ready, come get your helping of Mac and Cheese

Cost's a kiss, darling I'm sorry, pretty please?

Chairs are creaking, fridge is bare

You've got some noodle in your hair

It makes you laugh, wind bursts through the open door

Desert flowers, you know we're in for quite a storm

We both smile and into the night flew

Like children

Me and you.
