The Letter

The Letter

A Poem by Jeremy Cooney
"

A story-song I wrote about a friend of mine, shaped after a few conversations we had.

"

Once there was a fair maid dwelling

In a land too close to home

She seemed to feel like she was fading

Content to live her life alone

She couldn't remember the taste of leather

She knew all was made from dust

And everyday she read the letter,

Reminded her to love and trust

And the letter read:

CHORUS

"To thine own self be true

And never stop dreaming

Till you're through.

And one day we'll meet again

I hope.

Just keep your eyes on the sky

I'll come back down and

Kiss your eyes someday."

She lived on as she waited

Experienced the finer points of life

Never once did she settle.

Content not to be "somebody's wife"

She wanted freedom, love, and honor

These seem to be so scarce in the world today

She wanted more and more what was never there

And so she read the letter everyday.

And the letter read:

CHORUS

BRIDGE

Well she grew weary, old, and tired

And decided it was time for her to rest

So she lay in bed from dusk till dawn

Saying, "Death, lay your kiss upon my breast"

She gave away all her worldly possessions

And all her money went to charity

Her house she gave to the homeless

But the letter she kept, for clarity.

And the letter read:

CHORUS

She was just about to fall asleep

When through the window flew a man of light

His smile she had only seen once before

The cape he wore shone black as night

He stepped over to the bed she lay in

And kissed her softly on the eyes

Her limp hand soon dropped the letter

And he led her soul back through the troubled skies

And the letter read:

CHORUS

Just keep your eyes on the skies

I'll come back down and kiss your eyes

Someday.

Just keep your eyes on the skies

I'll come back down and kiss your eyes

Someday.

Just keep your eyes on the skies

I'll come back down and kiss your eyes

Someday.

I know that it saves time to write Chorus instead of putting the actual chorus there, but it takes away from the message of the poem. If you want to make more of an impact then take the few seconds to copy and paste the chorus to where it needs to be. Otherwise, I enjoyed the underlying message, especially when the letter turned out to be from death. Also, since it's a song, you probably did some sort of shenanigans with the beat. Dragging out some sounds and shortening others, you may want to find a way to show that in your writing, although i personally don't, just a suggestion Anyways, keep writing!
