Tonight, I Threw Your Necklace in a RiverA Poem by C.E.M.It's just what I did tonight. And it felt... amazing.Tonight, I Threw Your Necklace in a River. There isn’t a soul on this earth who could tell me, The river doesn’t do magic things. It’s carried fish to the ocean, And Moses to his destiny. The river lives to change us. To help us drink, Or drown. Tonight, I chose to drown. My past life, my tears, The way you looked at me When she couldn’t see. The way I said your name. The dreams I’ve had Where my hand is in yours. All that’s left of it; A birthstone necklace. All my time invested, Reflected in the ruby. I wanted to drown it all. As a metaphor, a sacrifice. So maybe, from the water, I could emerge, reborn. I bundled up the chain in my hand And whispered the only truth I know anymore. “You were never any good for me, anyways.” I chucked it, hard as I could, Right into the starlit water. I felt my lungs expand With the cool breath of summer night. And exhale Everything we’ve ever said. No more. The sky is clean, Like my heart. Stars shine like freckles, And kiss me like They know I’m okay. © 2018 C.E.M.Author's Note
