That Smile

A smile says a thousand words, or so I am told.

Mine is not like most.

It is new, unsettling. Fake.

Does this idea scare you,

That not everything is real?

The world is hidden behind closed doors,

Where dreamers come to rest.

The dreamers dream until each dream grows old,

And it, too, will come to rest.

The dreams are ordinary,

But they cannot be seen.

Neither can the truth behind a smile

Or the misery behind the laugh.

How many times do you think you see a smile like that?

Is that scary to you to not know what is going on?

Or is it just reality that we all must move on?

I am just a dreamer

Going on about my day.

I don't smile very frequently.

It never wants to stay.

But one day I will be behind the doors.

Another endless dream to rest forever more.

Incredible poem about the truth of a persons smile. I enjoyed your questions and the thoughts they provoked. You bring attention to what so many of us have conditioned ourselves to ignore. That a persons smile always says more about a person than we realize at times. I also like how you intertwined thoughts about smiles, real, unreal, and dreamers. You let the reader travel back and forth through so many worlds. Very well written, please keep writing!
