Better PrisonsA Screenplay by Eric WeickWGA Copyright 2014-2019 Title: Better Prisons Genre: Drama/ Fiction Idea: An angel and a demon examine the lives of five different people living within a city. Being old rivals the demon challenges the angel to a bet, that he can tempt these people away from God. She accepts, knowing that she is not as strong as the demon, but in hopes that she can help these people. Throughout the night they visit the five people, The immigrant: A forty year old chef from Ukraine who has come to America in hopes of a better future for his son. Haunted by his past, his younger bother killed in the Ukraine riots of 2014, he is tempted when a Russian immigrant who enters his Dinner that night, reminding him of the idea that “I am not a free man.”
The Student: A twenty year old college student and his friends are sitting at a bar that night joking over there studies. The topic of God is brought in conversation, Being some one who secretly believes, he defends the idea amongst his friends. Exiting the bar, they witness a car crash. The student rushes over to a victim a woman crushed in the car. He watches her die. Seeing this he starts to question “Does God exist? “
The Lover: A young girl, age of nineteen, meets with her boyfriend in a park. She meets him to tell him that she is pregnant. Knowing his past, she questions whether he could change and be a good father. He pleads with her, asking her to marry him, but she starts to question him, and herself, afraid she asks “ Should I forgive him?” The Soldier: A Iraq combat vet meets his good friend. His past haunts him, so he meets, in hopes that he can talk something out. It doesn’t work. Walking back home on the street, he sees the image of a young indian girl that he could not save during his time at war. Returning to his apartment, he takes a gun looks in the mirror asking himself “ I couldn’t save her, can I save myself? “ The Pastor : A thirty year old pastor, is in a meeting with the church board about funding, and the future of the church. He is arguing that the money be spent on a better stage, better equipment for the church. A woman on the board argues with him that the church is going downhill, that in two months they will be done. Before walking on stage for his sermon that night, he starts to ask himself “Do I tell them the truth, these people will hate me?” Point: There are forces in this world, both physical and not, that push us to our limits, but in moments of darkness and fear, it is up to each us, to decide weather we fight against those forces, or let them take us as a hole. Unique : A story about God, faith, angels and demons, told in a more intellectual, un-bible thumping way.
