Try As I Might

Try As I Might

A Poem by Carole

Try as I Might

Try as I might, I can't do it all.

I am behind, can't seem to get on the ball.

Though I once seemed to be able to handle it,

Now, I'm coming out on the short end of the stick.

Seasons change and there's a lot on my plate,

Some things will obviously have to wait.

If you can't find a towel, look in the dryer.

If there are no clean dishes, are you for hire?

Though several people once had chores,

They seem to have become mine-(When it rains, it pours)-

I have dishes, vacuuming, cooking & mopping;

It surely has kept me hopping…

Painting, haircuts, dog grooming, yard work and laundry…

It keeps me in quite a quandary.

If you look in your drawers and there are no clean underwear,

What can I say, you might have to wear a dirty pair.

If you are hungry and there is nothing on the table,

Look in the frig and grab a mirror—Call for "Marty" or "Mable."

He/she can cook better than you think.

Get out a recipe book, grab your mirror, and give him/her a wink.

If while you are taking a shower,

You decide the mildew will over power,

Grab some cleanser and a scrubber; With alittle elbow grease

That mildew is bound to cease.

If the toilets need a scrubbing,

And you don't mind a little rubbing,

Grab the brush and give it your best shot,

Oh yeah, I knew you could make it look hot-

The sinks will respond in the exact same way-

Go ahead—Make my day.

I won't complain, I won't have a fit,

It will take a load off of my shoulders & not just a bit.

Now, I don't want you to feel guilty—

Just realize, some things are down right filthy.

The vacuum cleaner doesn't run on its own-

Somebody's got to do it; another skill needs to be honed.

If you don't mind helping, it sure would be great-

Being a team will lessen the wait-

For clean towels, and underwear, and dishes to boot-

Not only that, it will save you some loot.

I love you all, and I do what I can.

Just realize, I am only one (wo)man-

I'm not super human with scads of time-

I'm just a mom trying to make a few things rhyme.

Though I'd like to say this is all a big joke,

I assure you this is no hoax.

I need some help to make it all work,

Who knows?  When you do, there just may be some extra perks-

A Mom that won't be so tired and cranky-

That won't feel like a emotional wreck with a hanky-

A mom that will learn there is a life beyond cleaning-

With just a little help and team work, life will take on a  whole new meaning.

This is a great "get off the couch and make yourself useful" poem. It is amazing how just a little help makes such a huge difference But getting kids to help can almost be more work then it's worth. This poem makes playful work of chores not done. Thanks for the fun write.

Moms get dumped on, that's for sure. Unless one puts their foot down--like you did in an amusing way here. I found myself smiling throughout your well written poem. I have no one here now to pass the work load onto. I should be signing off and getting to the task list. haha
Thank you, you made my day with your announcement of weaing a dirty pair if there's no clean undies. haha Oh, too funny!

this is, at the least, a family poem signifying inspiration and the value of success,
as well as a work of personal insight, your words flow with imagery that adds
great detail to the meaning, and how it applies to the circumstances in every day
struggles and what it takes to overcome adversity, which in turn applies benifit,
the reward of coming togther. carol you scripted your thoughts very nicely,
the thoughts are light, yet powerful, a perfect reflection of understanding, mike

This is such a good piece and I want to send it to all my girls. lol They just don't seem to get it for some reason. This hits home around my house for sure. I think every kid in every house should be given a copy with the following words at the top. WORDS TO LOVE BY. This is an true well said piece
about the way mothers are treated today. Beautifully Said.

This should be the mantra of wives and mothers everywhere! I'm not a mother, as of yet, but I can completely relate to this. Mothers are the most under rated and under paid group in America. No one gives enough credit to house cleaning and child rearing. People in the workforce act as if stay at home moms watch soap operas and eat bon-bons all day. My mom stayed at home and worked her rear off. She kept our house more than just lived in...it was immaculate. And we did have assigned chores and we did them, too. This is what is wrong with our youth. We are raising children to expect everything and doing nothing to earn it. You can't get something for nothing in life. The sooner that is taught, the better.

Great job and thanks for sharing.

Ha ha this was funny AND true. I feel anyone that lives in the same house should share the load. If they eat they can wash a dish and if they wear clothes they can learn to do laundry. Nice job sticking up for mom.
