Thinking of him

Thinking of him

A Poem by Autumn's Child

“I was just thinking of you,” he said.

Funny.

I was thinking of him too.

After I woke up each kid regardless of their feelings about school.

After I scrambled to get lunches ready,

breakfasts made,

shoes on and backpacks filled,

all while getting myself ready for work.

After I paid the rent,

the daycare bill,

the school bus pass,

for the groceries, the school clothes, the soccer gear.

After I took one kid to one place

and picked up the other somewhere else.

After I noticed once again that the promised check

never hit the mail.

After I warmed up leftovers nobody wanted to eat.

After I fought to get homework done,

showers taken,

teeth brushed,

bedtimes abided by.

After I balanced a full check register

and an empty bank account.

After I collapsed on the couch

and surveyed a house

that one pair of hands

could never keep clean.

After I went to bed too late

to just do it all again the very next day.

Yeah.

I was thinking of him too.

makes me respect single mothers, even my own and reminds us all of the fact that just like any other single woman, they fall in love too...though as a single twenty two year old daughter of a recently single mother the idea of my mother playing the same field I am is hard to swallow :)

this reminds me of how my mom must of felt with my sister and i sometimes. i appreciate the reality of this poem, and how it's still somehow pretty.

Wow..
this is amazing. And being too young myself to have to take care of anyone other than my own mother, I am in awe of this.
I can barely manage caring about someone now, when all I have is college and work... and reading this... I just. I don't know.

You've left me speechless and in wonderment.
Beautiful poetry.
