When All We Hear

When All We Hear

A Poem by Chloe Beck

When All We Hear

Criticism.

Suggestions.

Assumptions.

Cries.

Solutions.

Changes.

Problems.

Lies.

The sound of society influencing our minds.

Trying to distinguish what the best could be

yet, concluding a decision that won’t affect me.

I’ve got this life I know and can’t see past

But with society speaking up I can’t just ignore

when all I’m hearing is the sound of others in words.

My friends, celebrities, public figures online

make influences, trends, and changes in such short time.

How to figure out what really needs to be heard

When all we hear is

*A Notification Tone Alert*

Very deep! It shows how much technology runs our lives to the point where we start to follow trends that are online.

There is an interesting short film on NPR's website just yesterday about how the smartphone and "notifications" are changing us...and not necessarily for the best. The last line of this really packs a punch and surprised me. It was as if I was reading just another poem about being disillusioned by society, and then....*a notification tone alert*. Oh, THAT! It gave the poem a whole new meaning for me.
