Compassion Campaign

Compassion Campaign

A Poem by David Welch

It’s official: no red
ribbons this Labor Day
for the workless, the luckless,
our utilitarian flotsam.  Newspaper
headline asks:

“Is nation tired of jobless?”

At a working man’s funeral mass,
one of these unfortunate statistics sat
amid the mourners and envied the ashes
encased at the foot of the altar.

Two days later he was dead, wrists opened,
crimson ribbons disintegrating in shallow water …

“Daydreaming”

hung
on hotel door.
