Prologue

The choice was mine. She begged me to make the decision and to finally tell her what she desperately needed. “Tell me that you can’t live without me”, was written on her face. It was the truth, but I could not condemn her to this life. I would rather lose her love than watch her become a monster like myself. The fear and rejection filled her eyes as the tears rolled down her cheeks and she realized what thoughts were running through my mind. She read them clearly as if they were her own, without using her limited power.

But why had it come to this? Why could I never protect her? Maybe I was destined to suffer because I possessed the ability to destroy others while saving myself. As I knelt down to her broken body, I wondered if her love would continue for me, even after making the choice.

“Not yet. There is still a chance for you,” I whispered as a cupped her face in my blood stained hands.

“Why?” She asked breathlessly.

“You are safer in this form. You can’t be used as a tool for them.”

“Don’t do this. The pain…”

“I know.”

I still had one option and even though it meant I would suffer an immeasurable amount of pain, this was my choice. I held one of her hands against my forehead and the other over the gaping wound in her stomach. A light appeared around us and my decision was made. There was no turning back and with this, I could protect her longer from being used as I was in the past.
