Maybe

Maybe

A Poem by Cassie Shay
"

In March, one of my friends was shot in the head. When I found out, I didn't know what to do. So I wrote a poem for him.

"
The world’s gone cold
I know now
What it’s like
To see someone you love
Suffer this fate
I can wish and hope
And I can pray
I don’t know what it will do
Will it save you?
Maybe.
Will it keep you alive?
Maybe.
But if it doesn’t?
I don’t want to live
In a world where
Your joy and your smile
Are no longer there
Your passion for your faith
And family and sports
Your funny stories
Our strange memories
Will I ever hear your voice?
Maybe.
Will I get to see you smile?
Maybe.
But if I don’t?
I feel numb
Except for the fear
Creeping into my bones
My muscles and cells
The fear of a world
Without you there
It’d be dark
With no sun shining
Cold and dark
No reason to carry on
Will I be able to smile?
Maybe.
Will I be able to laugh?
Maybe.
But if I can’t?

Author's Note

Cassie Shay
In case any of you are wondering how he is, he's perfectly fine. A little paranoid, yes, but no major damage. Two days after being shot point blank in the back of the head, he checked himself out of the hospital.
