Locket

Locket

A Poem by Chris Shaw

inside your soldier hands
my silver heart
of sterling i am valued
more than gold
undo the tiny clasp
find you and i
the wealth lies in the
timeless bond we hold

i am the reason why
you fight to live
there’s nothing more of me
that i can give
our lips meet daily
in the desperate dark
come life or death
we’ll ne’er be torn apart

Romantic to the core, this piece contains all the ingredients, the memento or locket, that brings memories, the presenting of danger in the soldier, the threat of death and the pledge that even this will not separate an eternal bond. So nicely worded.

This lovely, nostalgic piece puts me in mind of "the Greatest Generation," WWII, when Love & Death were so intertwined ...held close in a silver locket :)

"When I first came to London it was pouring down rain, I met a little girl in the field canteen, painted her name on the nose of my plane, six more missions I'm gone..." Steve Earle

I love a good service romance. It isn't always so romantic though waiting, wondering, worrying, hoping, praying...my son-in-law is Army special forces out on field maneuvers for eight weeks. My daughter has four children to care for in his absence. It's never easy, even when there is no war. I enjoyed the read.

Chris,
This reminds me...
My grandparents died just weeks apart after seventy-six years of happiness together. There was great toil and difficulty raising nine children through the depression, then four boys off to war. One died in his twenties another was lost at birth. There was always the work. The gardens, the crops, the carpentry, the cooking, milking, cleaning and on and on. But in my many years of life, the softest kisses I have ever seen were Papa with right hand on the back of Mama's rocker, the other on the arm as he bent down to kiss her upturned lips.
My, my, my...

Lockets are priceless in the sense that you cannot put a price on what's inside.
Usually, they mean something so special, but just to one person...the one wearing it.
Love cannot be severed by distance or by a bullet...not when it is this strong.

An eternal bond of love is so deeply read in your words. There's no physical presence needed for it to be felt. Such love stays reinforced in spirit, forever. The locket becomes such a powerful token of it. This a poem that will stay with me.

Lockets seem to be a symbol of the past. They're not worn much anymore.
And yet within a locket, so much is revealed and released. Deeply felt poem. Lovely.
