our birch is grieving i can see
it does not stand in majesty
and though the sky is cloudless blue
green leaves are trembling in the sun
its leaves are whispering it’s true
its heart is heavy what say you
do you see through nature’s eyes
nature doesn’t tell me lies

this birch is crying for a friend
a neighbour in our garden fair
today our cypress meets an end
today it shows more majesty
than all the living trees that stare
upon sad branches now laid bare
today awaits the cruelest fate
tomorrow gone it won’t be there
