Graveyards In The Sky

Graveyards In The Sky

A Poem by Chris Shaw

a stampede across night’s tired face
hides moon’s lucent lunar light

chariots of moving menace
driven at speed by wailing winds

moody and morose blotting out
silver smooth unblemished skin

dark smoky ghosts billowing greys
dull her shimmering surface

dimming her loveliness from those
who are supposed to be sleeping

where do they all go when they pass
at haste in a race of silent chase

gathering pace in the velvet dark
speeding without care or attention

graveyards in a murky sky my belief
where clouds drive home to die

Hello there

Thank you for sharing this moody and ethereal poem. I spend a lot of time out on the moor and this poem really encapsulates a lot of the emotions I feel out there.

There’s something so folkloric and mysterious about the images you have placed so carefully in your poem. It feels brooding and alive. As if the words are quietly existing below the surface.

Those last six lines really feel as if you are describing another world unseen. Adjacent to this. You can’t help but want to dive into the poem to learn more.

Thank you for sharing this one. It brought up some very familiar places for me.

A murky graveyard in a fog of clouds. What's not to love? "So nice and...gloomy", to quote Wednesday Addams. I enjoyed the read.

Thank you for that encouragement Neville. I appreciate your thoughts.
There was a song called "Ghost Riders In the Sky" back in the 40's and 50's, recorded by, among others, Johnny Cash. There seems to have been an old Apache Indian belief that that the souls of the dead took up residence in the sky. Not far from that to the graveyard motif you present here.

I enjoyed the darker tone of your prose in this one Chris. I half expected a mention of the baying of hounds during the night hunt. Despite not being there, this was quite evocative.
