Reminisce

Reminisce

A Poem by Chris Shaw

this index finger on my write hand
settles on words written in
bold black ink

tracing the pathway
of a poet’s pen in slow motion
and repeating with reverence
over and over again

these lines harboured by time
scribed on the inside cover
of this book of longing

a gift

‘Why are we doing this today
she said’
‘So we can write about it for
years and smile’
he replied

and years later we continue
to smile as we write our poems

but in truth there is forever an ache
in that part of my heart
reserved for a poet
who fluttered a butterfly’s
dormant wings with his
words of romantic
yearning

I think of hope. And the monotony of life over time.

This is why we should be nice to people as often as possible, why we should try and create positive memories as often as we can. As time passes beyond middle age those memories become who we are, what our regrets really are, what gives us self worth in spite of those regrets... eventually, we all get to realize at some point that the amount of time we have left is no longer enough to overcome the memories, they better be good memories worth a lifetime... otherwise, ouch, a retirement full of self loathing awaits.

I might have lost track of things there, I'm not sure if all of that has anything to do with your poem.

Love it none the less though. I'm a pretty big fan of yours.

A poet knows how sensitive and delicate the poems are. Still , they can hold the words and burden that are beyond measure. Your words and its deliverance are priceless ❤

It is always my pleasure to read your words...
There seems to be a bond between people and between people and their poetry..... and this poem spans a long time of beautiful writing from younger years to aging ones... and even passing ones..written with care, kindness and love...as always in your poetry Chris...you really have a knack...

There seem to be a number of works about loss and impermanence on W/C at this time. Here we have the recalling of poetic lines written years ago that reflect the ongoing relationship of today. The poem's end, however, seems to refer to a poet who is no longer with us. Thus the speaker leaves us with an air of mystery.

Beautiful words, Chris...
And this shows a real appreciation and respect and love for our genre.

And we will write for all the years we are on this earth.
