Snapshots of their Memory

Snapshots of their Memory

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Wishing all my poetry friends a wonderful Christmas. For those who don’t celebrate Christmas , my best wishes.

"
once upon a festive month
festooned for all the street to see
the fairy lights adorned a tree
and outside too the lamps were lit

this year the cheer is in the shade
the house is empty void of life
yet I recall the laughter when
those neighbours giddy in their prime
celebrated Christmas time
with friends and all their family

yet now their days have come and gone
no longer present is their song
though lovely in our minds we hold
the snapshots of their memory

I love the line” the cheer is in the shade” which shows that this delightful cheer is simply a fond memory now…. It’s always lovely toremember what holidays were like years ago, so much light and joy… now it’s an empty space…. All that exists is Remembrances of long ago ….
Thanks for sharing dear Chris

Such feelings of nostalgia and a sense of sadness at the passing of time. Memories fade but pictures remind us and buried deep under such forgetfulness are emotions that surface with life's little reminders. A very emotive write Chris. Loved it.

I enjoyed your write. Life is shorter as the seasons move along. So many of my favorite Christmas stories revolve around simpler times when more value was placed on family and togetherness at Christmas than gift-giving and that was just an extended expression of our love for each other. The 11th commandment from Christ was "Love one another" I find it most relevant in the Christian expression of faith. Love offers offense to none because it always seeks goodness, kindness, mercy and truth. How lovely to have fond memories of what should be the most loving season of all. "For God so loved the world..."

Chris this is one of those poems that not only is a snapshot of memories but draws one in with its word choice and rhym that isn't rhym. The rhym comes in one's head from the tone rhythm not the words themselves. Wonderfully done.

Thank you Soren for your encouragement. You are appreciated.

Chris
This reminds me of Sandi Patty song that begins, "She leaned with her head on the window, watching evergreen bend in the snow, remembering Christmas the way it had been, so many seasons ago..." The song tells the story of a lonely woman who has no reason to celebrate getting a visit from friends who chase away the loneliness. I remember the shock of trying to have a Christmas after all the children were grown and out of the house. It is a jarring, difficult experience. Thank you for this lovely poem. It reminds us that some among us have more memores than reasons to celebrate the holidays.
