I love the onion metaphor many poets seem drawn to, which I often encountered but seldom understood until recently. We might seem dense and sturdy, but it only takes a flicker to reveal the thin, transparent, and fragile layers that hold us all together. I wonder if the scarring on these layers causes them to become more resilient and tough, or thins them out into fragmental pieces of judgement.
Wonderful poem, but I expect nothing less from your brilliant mind, Chris.

I really appreciate this thoughtful review. Thank you kindly.
This holds an expectation of harm and the need for protection and defensiveness. Visions of past pain conditioning one into flinches. So short but saying so much. Stated in such a way that the vary last line has a twist changing first expectations just like a reflexive jerk to threat. Very nice Chris.
Albert, my paternal grandfather introduced me to Tennyson when I was nine. I have loved poetry ever since but did not attempt writing a single piece until I was 40. It's never too late to try somethin.. more..
