Veils

Veils

A Poem by Chris Shaw

be careful where you place your trust
like dust it falls on solemn ground
you think you’ve nurtured
friends and then
you find
that they’ve been using you

don’t let their shade
blot out your light
the sky won’t lose its summer blue
and neither will the midnight stars
hide their sparkling eyes from you

the flowers in your garden fair
they won’t turn the other way
and neither will the blackbird stop
to greet you with a song
each day

the lakes will always be a friend
the morning mists will lift and then
with clearer eyes without the tears
pick up the shards
begin again

and harbour not the shadows cast
for life’s too short for hurts to last

I have a sneaking suspicion that you are much like me when it comes to giving trust to others in giving yourself for the sake of hopefulness:/ I have nurtured the grounds of many a poor soul over the years but every now and again one of them blooms into something beautiful and makes the wasted efforts look so unimportant:) one or two of those efforts still sting me too but I try to focus on the good ones and let the burning ones shrink to a faint whisper:) well scrawled dear Chris

Hear hear Chris!
Plus, all that planning to make their death look like an accident and then disappearing the proof would just weigh on your mind and ruin the enjoyment you get from gazing lakeward and smiling... at all the ones who crossed you and whose bodies won't be found in their watery graves!
...... And that is why I shouldn't review until I've finished that Thursday murder club book! Pfft!
Next thing you know I'll hear someone tout once too often, behind my back in the queue at sainsbury's and before you know it I'll be on the front page of the news, with a no doubt terrible name, like the asparagus killer! 🙄
Right! I'm away to finish this book even if it kills me... or someone else! 😊

I am and I shall try to Chris, thanks.
well done, Chris .. words to live by .. i especially appreciate how your poem points to points in nature that give us joy and comfort are not changed by the betrayal of another human being .. it's a great place to start to pick up those pieces .. i am reminded also of a verse from the Bible "But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you." KJV Luke 6:27-8 ;) great poem .. nature provides us with something concrete we can hold on to .. those songs of greeting from your blackbird ..

As you get older you decipher who are friends and those who never show when it matters. I like it Chris.

Many thanks duff for stopping by to share your thoughts. You are appreciated.

A great message. Yes nature is always honest, people are not. An animal will let you know what they think of you. A person may or may not depending on what they think is in their best interest. The sky, trees, and rivers you can always count on to be there no matter what state they may be in they don't turn their back.

Nice write about truth in our lives as so called friends go passing by. Been there many a time, throughout my life. I guess that's why I have few friends. Don't always trust people anymore. ;-]

The poem in its entirety speaks of the hurt and grief that we all at some point go through, Yet there's always room to begin anew and a lot of beauty left to see. This was one heartfelt expression that you wrote :)
