Casualties of Cold

Casualties of Cold

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(Cyclamen, purple headed reduced to mush)

"
butterfly flowers
shielded from sharpest of winds
perish in their beds

even the hardy
succumb to the savage bite
of winter night-frosts

When the hardy were perishing, those tender flowers didn't stand a chance. Yet, we always hope they will. This poem speaks to me of a very harsh and biting winter. One that has no place in it for fragile softness or colour. I feel the heartbreak in your words. We all wait eagerly for the winter to end.....Beautiful Haikus, dear Chris!

Even in sadness you evoke a thoughtful heart-rending piece of beautiful poetry, Chris. There is beauty even in the darker things of life. A song of melancholy. They whisper a future hope of Spring. Excellent piece from one of my fave poets. CLE

Winter is definitely a foe to the gardens and their inhabitants. Mine were beautiful up until a week ago now nothing but a wasteland. Nicely done Chris.
