Souvenirs

Souvenirs

A Poem by Chris Shaw

it's not often the case
i am attracted to or drawn
towards displays of craft art

yet beside the harbour
in the undercover marketplace
I discovered temptation

to both my surprise
and delight delectable brooches
designed in sterling silver

delicate dragonflies adorned
with the tiniest of sea pearls dotted
down a segmented abdomen

wings worked intricately
like fine lace in appearance
on silver sheet which left its mark

as did the mesmerising eyes
of course of the seller which danced
below a blue paisley head band

a reminder of another time
another place when I could have
should have and sadly didn't

As a crafter, I understand your appreciation for the brooches you saw but I can assure you (I think) the seller in the blue head band was very proud of their wares and hopeful you would purchase one. Though maybe not, but I would have been had you been looking on my art. I know that I take each piece personally and put a lot of love into what I do. Just as I can you have with your poem. I suppose we are all crafters. Though, thinking about it...I have never seen a booth at a fair offering hand crafted poems, perhaps we will have to change that. : )

I had similar experiences as Carlos here - mother, though, not grandmother. She didn't mind if I explored her jewellery box.

Jewelry is a timeless craft. Each piece touched by a hand with a specific vision. Something that can be passed along. I like it Chris.

In the 90's I visited Portland, OR for business and stayed over the weekend. I discovered an art fare under one of the bridges and it made me feel like I was in a time warp. Most of the vendors looked like they just stepped out of the 60's and 70's. Tie-died shirts, paisley headbands, guys with long hair and a multitude of different arts and crafts, even some beautiful jewelry pieces. This poem reminds me of that. The way you described the brooch was beautiful and, if I had seen it, I probably would have bought it. Thank you for sharing. Lovely piece. Temp

A beautiful poem Chris. I remember back in my youth sneaking into my grandmother's room and looking through her jewelry box. She caught me and instead of being angry she sat down and rummaged through her things describing each piece and the story about how it came into her possession. So many remarkable stories from ear rings, broaches, and necklaces. Each had a tale that came with it. I never understood the attraction women have to jewelry until then. They carry significant memories. CLE

what a lovely and otherwise nostalgic poem you have again crafted Chris .. it seems to me, the moral here is too obvious to type .. your message understood and crystal clear .. and of course, thoroughly enjoyed this fine sunny Saturday mane.

not only a beautiful poem...but this made me think of the Kevin Costner film "Dragonfly"

something left behind on purpose so that the person will be remembered....maybe our poetry could be thought of as a Dragonfly medallion...
