Variations on a Theme

Variations on a Theme

A Poem by Chris Shaw

when I see those green leaves turn
with the heat of desert burn
all around I sense that fall
hovers by the garden wall

bouquets of summer please don't go
your ribbons are still decked in gold
and I would miss your presence here
with onset thoughts of winter cold

all that flora fades at night
sad to witness birds in flight
swans still pair on river's glass
love once born is meant to last

It's funny because every summer when the heat is blazing I can't wait for fall. Then when winter gets here I wish I was back in summer.

And yet, I have to agree that summer gives us flowers and memories to hold onto throughout life. Another steller poem from you Chris. :)

It’s interesting how you managed to weave all these ideas into a cohesive whole but end on a disjunctive couplet that holds the whole thing up as more than description.

Yes seen it all on news and the fires in uk and USA Europe
Ah, this is beautiful. The fade of summer into the darkest nights of winter, how the florals fade and the birds mostly hum and chirp in the quiet. I’m a bit excited for the colder seasons, but then whenever I’m in the midst of them, I miss the summer! This poem is smooth and so flows so well. It has that beautiful subtle sparkle all your poems do, that slow build up. Each line is gorgeous and makes this such a visually appealing piece, too. Thank you so much for sharing.

Yes a rhymer J. Cool breeze on a hot day, I will take that as a compliment. Thank you dear friend.read more
The leaves on the trees are indeed already starting to turn brown, with the scorching sun we've had recently. I love all the seasons, but I wish that summer could last longer than it does. I don't really want another 40-degree swelter though! Your last two lines are delightful, Chris! Swans have grace, charm and beauty - and they pair for life! A lovely poem!
