Variations on a Theme

A Poem by Chris Shaw

when I see those green leaves turn
with the heat of desert burn
all around I sense that fall
hovers by the garden wall

bouquets of summer please don't go
your ribbons are still decked in gold
and I would miss your presence here
with onset thoughts of winter cold

all that flora fades at night
sad to witness birds in flight
swans still pair on river's glass
love once born is meant to last

It's funny because every summer when the heat is blazing I can't wait for fall. Then when winter gets here I wish I was back in summer.

And yet, I have to agree that summer gives us flowers and memories to hold onto throughout life. Another steller poem from you Chris. :)

beautiful Chris, this feels soft and floats like a feather. All that you have written eventually becomes the day we experience or the season we long for. Really nice.
Not mush new is being posted so I am reading some older work.

dearest Chris … I have buried Summer Peach Seeds in my Flower Pots… hoping they will take Root and I will transplant to my small Orchard of Cherry trees . Next Autumn or so… Summer is silently reaching for the other side of the Earth.. always sharing a new birth. Soon the Colors of Autumn will settle on your Hearth and we will wait for Winter Snow. gently, Pat

Everything changes. That seems to be the only thing that stays the same. My daughter and I watched a great gaggle of Canada geese walking through a parking lot yesterday; about twenty or more. She practiced her goose walk with them. The last month I have been harvesting flowers from my gladiolus, one at a time and placing them in a vase on our kitchen table. The first three were peach and yellow. Today is my wife's birthday and the gladiolus seemed to know and bloomed a pink one, just for her. It's so beautiful , just like her. I enjoyed your lovely poem. Bless, F.

not a problem...
The bouquets of summer can hang around as long as they want. However, this godawful heat has me yearning for those autumn leaves. Of course, come February I'll be pleading for May to come. Satisfaction is like the mayfly; it doesn't linger very long.
