My grandfather used to say to us kids “if you can’t say something nice don’t say it at all “ amongst lots of other sayings that were instilled also by my parents other sayings
We grew up to respect elders especially since we lived with an ill grandfather with parents

I clicked on the title, because in a program I recently watched it was mentioned that certain people wirh "extremely concrete thinking" cannot go beyond the literal meaning of the phrase"One that lives in a glass house shouldn't throw stones." Maybe that's why they insist on throwing stones - after all, they literally don't live in a glass house.
