Riding The Crest of a Wave

Riding The Crest of a Wave

A Poem by Chris Shaw

cradled in your arms
without a doubt i know
I can't travel that far back
though my heart song tells me so

soul pours forth its love
like a fountain overflowing
I embrace the ash of you
in silence not for showing

in birth i was your pain
in death you remain with me
until tomorrow's last farewell
when the tides will set you free

Don't know how I missed this one Chris, but beautifully written.
Gives me thoughts of how a woman brings us all into the world and the birth pain isn't the only pain they feel, but the pain of having to do better than the last generation did.
She did do an okay job though, didn't she? 😊
Beautifully penned, as ever.

Dear Chris, these lines are so resonant and poignant, as is your entire deeply touching poem. Your mastery of language, flow, rhyme, imagery, metaphor, simile, alliteration is evident in every word and line. The passing of our mothers reshapes us around a wound that never heals. I feel your own heart and pervasive sense of loss here, as I do in my own self. Kindred pain and reaching. They are within us. Time and tides wait for no one, but endings can also be beginnings. Sending love and hugs to you my friend. Thank you for this evocative write.

This is the story of life and death that each one of us must face Chris and you have portrayed it well in your poem. I like the thought of the tide setting you free. Of course dealing with the death of a parent brings up the most intense feelings.
All the best,
Alan

This is so beautiful Christine and that you gave over your mum to that which you love would have had her smiling.
Hope you are keeping well.

This is the third time I've read this.

It's heartbreaking every time. It makes me cry. To know the end is unavoidable.

It's soul crushing. This is one of those reasons I Know you're a monster. It takes great skill to break hearts like that.... Chris Shaw you have some devil in you

Chris this is so beautiful. The love we profess for those that have passed is so often the most poignant.

This entire poem is gorgeous, but that last stanza is haunting and beautiful, just ties the whole thing together. The rhyming is impeccable and the palpable feeling of that deep ingrained, everlasting love is intense and perfect. It’s comforting and strong all at the same time. It’s nostalgic and heartwarming. Thank you for sharing.
