Another Lovely Day

Another Lovely Day

A Poem by Chris Shaw

as sun glare burns bright
energising bones weary from
coolness of recent June days

a mallard lazes on the pontoon
absorbing the early morning heat
dozing in half sleep

willows in the distance dip their
tumbling tresses into the river's
mirror reflection

while a single feather in its softness
a white purity caresses the surface water
with a light morning kiss

there is bliss for those who dwell
in moods of blue if they take off their
shoes and dance to nature's gift

how uplifting is this coming our way
what's more not a penny to pay for
gazing on sights set before our eyes

This one could be read as an antidote to a stressful day's work and then a bout of evening rush hours traffic. The word pictures conjure up images of peacefulness in the mind. And, as the poem states, they are all without charge. Forget the iPhones and just go outside for a while.

Also “purity caresses the surface water” is wonderful consonance that acts like an echo of rhyme without rhyming, elevating the entire phrase to elegance.

I came back to read this again as it is so masterly crafted: assonance is fairly common but perfect consonance(tresses, mirrors, rivers, reflections,) is uncommon.
Really a nice read, Chris.

What a lovely poem you have written. It is giving me a serene moment. Peaceful, calm and makes me want to sleep. It is as though I am there. Beings I have been up since 1:15 am this morning, sleep sounds good. It is now 1:35 pm here. I need some coffee now! First I must enjoy the moment. Thank you.

Chris,
This is excellent. I read a critic who talked about Shakespeare and in his greatest works C came out of B and B came out of A, showing an internal growth of the character’s understanding of self and situation. Another critic wrote about the truly great poems display the poet’s own personal discoveries that occurred during the process of writing. I think you have checked both of these boxes with this poem.
