Sowing Seeds

Sowing Seeds

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(an early attraction to gardening)

"
don't dig in the dirt
but she did and with a stick
or a stainless steel spoon or
anything else for that matter
she could find

which would allow her to scoop
or tunnel where often or not
slithering blind earth worms
appeared on the surface as if
by magic

wriggling writhing
greyish pink in colour
in ones twos or threes entwined
in their acrobatic paradise
exposed to daylight

working the soil
adding nutrients incorporating air
to provide foundations required for
new plant life to flourish
and grow

so that a single pink hollyhock
a splash of bright in a dismal
garden would find itself in company
of marigolds golden and warm
smiling in summer

brought back so very many of my own treasured memories of digging in the muck n popping seeds into the holes made by my grandfather & my fathers very own thumbs when I was a kid .. I just wish I had done more of the same thing with my own, when they were growing up .. and I do so still love a pink hollyhock :)

Dear Chris,
What an amazing point made here. We see the glory of the Hollyhocks and the Marigolds and forget those responsible for doing the backend work. Those quietly working under the dark soil, behind the stage, so that those stars may shine in all their glory. This is a shoutout to all the unsung heroes, working tirelessly to support the greats and who stay in the shadows, unnoticed. My friend, you have such a beautiful mind.

You are a woman of great depth 🌹
An innocent and childlike perspective in the manner of storytelling, it's like reading through a children's storybook with a tone of light mannerism and sweet delight. It gives off quite the positive vibe.
Personally, I had my fair share of gardening experience when I was but a tad toddler even if none of my gardens were lasting, I had fun and enjoyed the experience.
This slightlu reminds me of such experience, quite a delight.

Oops Joanna, just noticed the typos. Apologies.
Going off at a slight tangent, this reminded me of my early childhood, when a friend and I used to play in the garden, making mud pies. My mother was always happy to lend us a couple of old teaspoons! Funny how old memories like that come flooding back after lying dormant for decades! Learning to love the soil at an early age is a good thing, I would say. An evocative poem, Chris!

This 5x5 pentastich clearly describes a young person (maybe the author ? - could be anyone ?) who is intrigued by the delights of the English garden. 'Smiling' is a fine way to describe the marigold, well done Chris.
