Saturday Cake Bake

Saturday Cake Bake

A Poem by Chris Shaw

happiness came in stone coloured  crockery
in a pudding bowl with a wooden spoon
with each stirring of something special

creamiest of mixtures worked and poured
into baking tins placed high on oven racks
timed to rise to light and airy perfection

kitchen aromas drifted into the sitting room
where Ernie sat in his comfy chair
busy making roll ups in front of a red glow fire

tissue thin paper sandwiched a pinch of baccy
pressed and rolled into shape then finished with
spit lick before being stored in an old tin

but the best bit of all for a seven year old fidget
the remains left in the bowl of plenty
handed over by nan with a smile and a wink

Yes who doesn’t love the last lickings?, almost every child that I know, what a nice take family togetherness and warmth and love for each other….and it’s also fun to cook together as well…..and then Ernie busy making his rollups and gently putting them in a tin……the glow of the fire tops it off….warm a cozy Chris!

Thank you dear Julie. The best bit about bake day. Licking the bowl :)

This piece works well with non-rhyming tercets Chris. A busy kitchen I suspect (Ernie had the toughest job though).

Kind regards, Alan

Your welcome
You paint a wonderful scene with this one. It has a such a colorful tinge of innocence throughout. Reminds me of my Nan and Grandad before I could believe that they had been anything but love incarnate. (I found out later that they didn't always get along and were actual real people with bad days, good days, terrible days, so on. Who knew?) This played very well in my imagination. Thanks for that.

rolling your own is a lost art i am afraid ... men take pride in such things ...one of our adorable traits ;))))))))))))))))))))) ... my Ma could bake .. all kinds of things and I do not recall any "failures" .. ever .. she learned everything from her Ma .. things had to be just right .. licking the bowl or getting a pinch of dough .. the reward for patience and not "begging" .. boy does this one put me right back in me Ma's kitchen .. thanks, Chris .. for sharing ... i missed her a little more this past week or so ...
