A Poem by Chris Shaw

stylus settles on
the turntable of my life
black shiny vinyl
giddy with memories
starts automatic

in the groove is dad
dancing laughing
twisting turning
teaching me
to jive

trad jazz
belts out loud
never mind the neighbours
we're having fun
brass band bonanza

he shows me how it's done
as he spins mum
like a top across
varnished
parquet flooring

her full cotton skirt
flounces
vibrant citrus roses
energised
her eyes alive
with emerald smiles

perspiration
builds on his upper lip
till the music
slips away

to allow me
to change the record
here comes a new day

What a nice poem you shared here...the music, the dance and these things surrounding life! You portrayed a vibrant day filled with laughter and joy...very much enjoyed this.

I don't know how many days I will be here...perhaps the purpose of my returning has meted out....

Thank you dear Sharon for your lovely review. A special memory for me.

This is fabulous. But I think you may have thrown the younger generation a learning curveball. I wonder how many will have to look up the word "stylus". We may have to format the replay in MP3, well, CD at least. (laughing) I really enjoyed the read. My sweetest memories are of dancing with my children.

This was so beautiful and felt full of love and nostalgic memories. It’s so graceful, and I might say one of your best written ones. The poem almost has a beat to it, that lures you in and leaves you smiling. I loved the part about dancing and the way you ended it with plans for more the next day. A beautiful daily routine we could all do more. Grabbing your partner/s and just having a jive! Thank you so much for sharing.

How wonderful the memories! Could it only be that each of ours are as grand?
Thank you Chris for resetting the stylus.

I had this visual of mom and dad dancing on the record following the grooves spinning out of the way as the needle comes around again and again. Day after day their daughter's needs dictating the song of the day. Record of the year!

Hi Chris,
So loved this.. I own many vintage Vinyls from my younger days..
No replay in our lives.. Wish sometimes I could redo some things..or meet my husband sooner.
Little things like that..
Plus, reading your poem makes me want to hear how my new Sonos record player sounds..
Bought it and had it set up many months ago but still have never played any of my records on it..
Just been so busy starting our new lives here in Spain..

I will do that today!!
Thank you for the gentle push..
maybe this kind of scenario could be coming back, Vinyl is.
spinning like a record on the turntable.
only life allows us just one play....
no replays...
so we better dance while we can.
