A Poem by Chris Shaw

stylus settles on
the turntable of my life
black shiny vinyl
giddy with memories
starts automatic

in the groove is dad
dancing laughing
twisting turning
teaching me
to jive

trad jazz
belts out loud
never mind the neighbours
we're having fun
brass band bonanza

he shows me how it's done
as he spins mum
like a top across
varnished
parquet flooring

her full cotton skirt
flounces
vibrant citrus roses
energised
her eyes alive
with emerald smiles

perspiration
builds on his upper lip
till the music
slips away

to allow me
to change the record
here comes a new day

What a nice poem you shared here...the music, the dance and these things surrounding life! You portrayed a vibrant day filled with laughter and joy...very much enjoyed this.

I don't know how many days I will be here...perhaps the purpose of my returning has meted out....

i particularly love those metaphors in the first stanza. i must learn to use them in my poetry, as I think it makes it sing.

Awesome, music and dancing memories fill my head as well. So sorry if I repeat reviews but I forget where I left off and have a bit of fever. I’m also a bit far behind in my reading here.

All good here Christine, thank you
Well worded, these memories of yesterday. And I loved the ending, kind of sad in a way, but necessary for time to pass.

dear Chris… my Mother was the Dancer if only in her Dreams. I can appreciate the Memories of family where Music brought the family together. My Father’s best friend Johnny could play Boogie Woogie on our Piano. If he knew the Tune he could play it by Ear. I believe Johnny gave me an attitude of making everything worthwhile. Your poem gives us assurance of the Spirit of Mankind… and like fine Wine will have a Bouquet of quiet moments when love and peace remain. gently, Pat

You're very welcome!
Really enjoyed this. What a beautiful memory, so full of life and warmth! I can almost hear the music. And I love how the ending is so up-beat - there is a sense of living fully in the present without letting the joy of the past slip away. I need to work on being less bitter about loss, so I really appreciate this perspective!
