Eye of the Sun

Eye of the Sun

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(For Stuart Beattie Cullen, first anniversary, my brother-in-law)

"
as morning yawned
pale sun stretched out
sleep clung to fine cloud lashes
rock pond was dark
its surface still
no sign of welcome splashes

a perky robin came in sight
a visit unexpected
to quench his thirst
that little bird
thought he was undetected

you filtered through
a year has passed
like mist your soul has risen
while my sad sister's sorrowed eyes
have gained a lake like glisten

i'm sure your spirit sees it too
though waves of grief will soften
the love that binds the pair of you
is shatterproof and diamond bright
you're gone but ne'er forgotten

an almost blindingly beautiful tribute & dedication combined and all encapsulated within a single poem .. I imagine Stuart Beattie Cullen was a fine man and will long be sorely missed .. I do by the way believe that visits from robins have a certain significance and can often sense the presence of loved ones whenever they appear ......................... Neville

I like those thoughts in your first stanza. Welcoming splashes of mourning rain washing the yawn off our grieving brain. As the years of loss pass those who watch us live the lives we have to live without them without thought of time passing in our lives till we join them. (Did that make sense?)

Thank you Bill for sharing your thoughts here. All good wishes.

Beautifully captured Chris, and with a name like that, I'm guessing he had a connection of some kind to Caledonia of some kind. Well, with a name like that I'd expect him to have been a haggis chasing piper, but you never can tell.
You and yours must be wondering "has it been that long?" with all the other allness going on, but as you have said so eloquently, it should be a time to remember the good times as well as the sadness of him no longer being there.
Remember the smiles and raise a glass in his honour.
