Tattered, Torn and Somewhat Worn

Tattered, Torn and Somewhat Worn

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Inspired by my dear friend Jabob's Avatar - written some months ago

"
would your thesaurus tattered
well thumbed and torn
consider a companion
who's equally worn
battered and bruised
with the passing of time
despondent with life
in a state of decline

do you think that their shelf life
could benefit from
a friendship of sorts
as we both work our pens
do you think they would chatter
and natter like we
about the world's state
and our own poetry

would they adorn themselves freely
with garlands of flowers
drink to the rain
of past summer showers
reflect on the sixties
the years we loved best
before those old pages
eventually find rest

Wonderfully nostalgic, Chris :) ...I'm a big fan of Nostalgia.
I miss my old tattered thesaurus, now replaced with a finger-click; he's around here somewhere, buried in a cardboard box, maybe wondering how ole tattered me is doin'.
Ever seen Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'? ...If not, I guarantee you'll love it. I watch it about every 6 months. ( ... Golden-Age thinking :)

I like the rhythm. Also, the intensity of the words makes me more curious about the back story.

Yes, dear Chris... they most certainly would be the best of friends.
When Roger my husband is in Dialysis -- I go to the St. Vincent de Paul
Thrift Store-- and search the shelves for Old Books in nooks and corners.
I discovered a dear friend "Thesaurus" and keep it close to me. It answers my many questions...
and gives me Confidence and Camaraderie. Love your poem and all the garlands and toasts to the Rain. tenderly, Pat

Your poem was a delight to read. You educated me with the word "Natter", thank you for that. I really liked the sentiment in your words. I'm sure the poem that inspired you to write this was equally good. tyfs

Such fond memories you invoke. Interestingly I happen to have my own Roget's close at hand, though I don't refer to it as often as I should. You can tell, since it looks like I just picked I up from B Barnes and Nobel.
I'm sorry that I haven't been here for a while. I have been "foolishly" pursuing trying to get some of my work published. It seems like it's a lost cause.
Take care - Dave

Your poem is delightful and magical. Sadly, I haven't a thesaurus, tattered or otherwise. I had a Roget's back in high school and later an AP Stylebook in college. I do have an unabridged copy of Webster's dictionary in a leather bound three volume set but it mainly sits unused on my bookshelf. There's a huge maple leaf pressed between some wax paper in there somewhere. Perhaps my youngest daughter will enjoy thumbing through the dictionary some day. I enjoyed the read.

How I laughed when I read your splendid poem about your well worn and tattered Thesaurus. Mine is also in the same state. Tatty cover with pages curling! Well used and considered a loyal friend. I like your style of writing.
