Tattered, Torn and Somewhat Worn

Tattered, Torn and Somewhat Worn

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Inspired by my dear friend Jabob's Avatar - written some months ago

"
would your thesaurus tattered
well thumbed and torn
consider a companion
who's equally worn
battered and bruised
with the passing of time
despondent with life
in a state of decline

do you think that their shelf life
could benefit from
a friendship of sorts
as we both work our pens
do you think they would chatter
and natter like we
about the world's state
and our own poetry

would they adorn themselves freely
with garlands of flowers
drink to the rain
of past summer showers
reflect on the sixties
the years we loved best
before those old pages
eventually find rest

Wonderfully nostalgic, Chris :) ...I'm a big fan of Nostalgia.
I miss my old tattered thesaurus, now replaced with a finger-click; he's around here somewhere, buried in a cardboard box, maybe wondering how ole tattered me is doin'.
Ever seen Woody Allen's 'Midnight in Paris'? ...If not, I guarantee you'll love it. I watch it about every 6 months. ( ... Golden-Age thinking :)

me thinks you have thrown a log on the raging fire of the 60s
i have no idea if following generations have such strong connections to their worlds
this piece brings a thoughtfulness of respect to a time honored by a band of brothers and sisters
i must now go and find my old bandana!

Very creative how you work a thesaurus in, as taking the role of doing what people do in social interaction.

Two old shoes in a cozy box? Sorry. Sometimes my twisted sense of humor gats the better of me! Love the nostalgia here. Reminds me to always learn from the past. Great poem.

I'm going to be honest here, as I always try to be. This was brilliantly witty with its companionship theme.

I have lost count how many of them I have gone through since I was a kid. Very clever write, I always enjoy reading your work. And the sixties well I was a kid born in 62 but I adore the decade, great music, movies and the clothes well- that’s to be debated as with all decades.

I love this as I love all my old books, theasaurus included. It is all the more romantic to have the tattered paperback than to use the handy little app. You know what they say about nostalgia. It ain't what it used to be.
Excellent writing on an excellent multi layered subject.

There’s nothing I can say to this, it’s just beautiful, but ok I’ll try …

From the word go, I loved the idea of two people using the concept of books perhaps sharing a book shelf to decide if they would like to become companions, obviously understanding the metaphors involved, what I liked the most was them questioning, “shall we do this?” Are we compatible enough? Both with thesauruses, both with recollections of the sixties, maybe we’ll find out at a later date ;)
Wonderful.

sometimes I feel that Mr. Jacob doesn't recognize how much he is treasured here around the cafe, I am happy to see You've written something inspired and about him, though this wonderful wistful poem can be about many poets but I clearly can see it as a specific poem for Mr. J, specially when You mentioned the 60th, the last verse is warmly, beautifully haunting...
