A Losing Game

A Losing Game

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(A tribute on the 10th anniversary of her death, Amy Winehouse)

"
           somehow
.
it seems a tad distasteful
that raised wine glasses
       clink for amy
.
especially when her crusade
against alcohol addiction
    became a lost cause
.
ten years gone while our
bluebird of happiness swings
    in its usual place
.
            suspended
from a central wooden beam
    over our summer deck
.
     in silent appreciation
as back to black plays its dark
              lament
.
     as lantern light flickers
honeysuckle vines shoot strands
        from beehive chaos
.
saluting the mistress of song's
        creative vowels
       in scented respect

Im not sure if I already reviewed this but don’t think I did. Amy was a rare talent that I adore! Many of her songs are in my playlist. Such a shame and broke my heart that she outwardly portrayed herself as ok with her choices when I am sure she wasn’t. It seems talents like this muse from the pain and recreate it over and over. A vicious cycle of addiction. This is an amazing write, a tribute actually to that sad beautiful talent

What a beautiful poem for such a beautiful artist. She was truly a talent that I personally miss every day. Her whole body of work is astounding and I wish we could have seen what she would have continued to do. Really a lament tale and beautiful piece of work.

I must admit that ‘Love is a losing game’ is my favourite track of hers. I like the way that you have been able to convey not only the passing of time involved here (I was shocked that it’s been ten years!) but also the tragic circumstances she faced whilst creating beautiful music, losing her own battle along the way. A lovely tribute to Amy and the music she created.

It's a moving poem Chris. Death is a bitter reality. Every human being has to pass this stage.

Hi Chris, such a sad write you lay before us. It is sad to see anyone with an addiction, especially when they can kill indiscriminately. They take from anyone and they give only darkness in the end. Again, this is such a heartfelt poem. Hugs always....Mike.

Thank you so much. Such a sad loss. So talented was she.

Wow, very creative I must say. Helping someone with addictions can be quite difficult at times. Addictions are very hard to sober up and then to stay sober after getting the help you need. People who generally relapse usually surround themselves with bad influencers.

Love the creativity of your formatting on this, Chris. The year Amy died was the year I wrote my first poem and I was participating in a writing group on Facebook and remember so many others writing poems about her at that time. Her passing and my beginning to write will always, in some way, be intertwined in my head. I have lost a few loved ones to addictions of one type or another. It is so hard to watch the ways the addiction works on them and know there is so little you can do. Your poem is a lovely tribute because it offers the celebration of the artist, but also acknowledges the sad aspect of how we sometimes celebrate. I thought your second to last stanza was so beautiful and poignant. It felt like the spirit rising out but never fully being absent. Like the scent of honeysuckle lingering. This is such lovely work.

Amy Winehouse... Yes? An amazing woman loved her work, she left this world too soon. I love the portrayal of addiction, it is a relentless curse. Keep up the good work!
