Impulsive Spring

Impulsive Spring

A Poem by Chris Shaw

when eager spring pursued a speedy path
dashed in without a thought of taking heed
hoodwinked the yawning bulbs to early rise
threw off that winter coat she did not need
enjoyed the heat of summer come too soon
in haste no time was wasted that's for sure
magnolia in silence suffered so
unfurled those blooms fell quickly to the floor
while frosted breath at night made all retreat
as snow surprised our eyes with rising dawn
all colour gone the outlook bridal white
our garden fair stood lovely though forlorn
yet blackbirds undeterred their chorus heard
a gift of song for all and unreserved

I swear that each time I watch the weather report I half expect some model almost wearing a skirt to look at the camera, shrug with question mark eyebrows and a scooby doo expression and dissolve into a cartoon.
I swear in the past week alone we've had at least fourteen different seasons and all of them have left me with the same expression as the weather reporter.
If only they merged the weather with wheel of fortune, the accuracy rating would go up by at least infinity 😊
And if only we could interpret the blackbirds song, what would it say... "Mum, the microwave'on the blink again, these worms are still frozen in the middle!" 😊

for the first time since seemingly forever it has felt like spring is just around the corner .. we have a little wren making her nest in one of the boxes and the garden appears to be waking up .. albeit slowly .. or is it just me .. prolet is indeed a temptress .. Neville

Reminds me of how old movies moved time along, the spinning hands of a clock, snow falling, new buds, full foliage, autumn colors. You often write as though on a big screen, you once told me. ...and so well ! :)

You have described our snow-filled spring here in Colorado very beautifully. My poor flowers wilted by the cold look so pitiful it makes me want to sew a garment for them! ~Sharon

Yes when a surprise snow comes after lovely spring temperatures for a couple, it shocks the poor plants and trees that have already started blooming. It can kill some plants and some do okay and some won’t be back til next year because it caught them off guard.

This draws a clear portrait of a garden in full bloom with a coating of white thrown about. This is a beautiful poem about nature and how it can change within and instant catching humans and plants off guard

dear Chris... I love this Spring Sonnet that I
am reading on the morning of my Birthday as the Sun is rising.
We had a freezing" warning until nine am this morning-- April 23, 2021.
I always put a knitted sweater on my Blue Hydrangea when we have a
prediction of a 'freeze' during the night. I planted my new Hydrangea in a
Terra Pot that I can carry from my small porch to the front of my Yard where
bright sunshine will heal their cold little hearts. It works for me, since I
have not created a "green house" in our latest home of three years.
May your Garden prosper at your touch of tender care. tenderly, Pat

I hope your garden recovers quickly. I really enjoyed this poem. It has lovely rhythm, and I think you captured the spirit of blackbirds well; they seem content anywhere. Haha
