When The Heart Chooses

When The Heart Chooses

A Poem by Chris Shaw

love defies all logic
all boundaries, land and sea
it permeates through walls of rock
through doors without a key

unafraid of any borders
undeterred by darkest night
it doesn't need two wings to soar
or eyes to give it sight

love settles where the heart says
it's carried on each breath
it burns as if by magic
it can't be killed by death

in truth it's unrestricted
not caged within a home
it can float into the heavens
it can comfort when alone

its fervour undisputed
true love remains unshaken
its diamond strength enduring
its presence unmistaken

dear Chris... a year later... and it seems the World is topsy Turvey. However, Love is a feeling that we choose through all sorts of Weather.
Our feathered friends still gather to sing their Songs, and I leave Seeds for them... for strength and fortitude. Be blessed... Pat

Something admirably beautiful written here. Defining love is one of the most difficult task. But your definition of love seems to be adding beauty to love itself. Wonderful.

Thank you Fran Marie for your thoughtful response. All the best to you.

Delmar Cooper(the third person in the usual human trinity of perspectives ) sat down to write:
"This is a poem of pleasant simplicity that gives this reader .... yada, yada, yada. "
I (numero uno in the trinity) slapped his crusty old a*s away from the keyboard. I don't think it is simple at all. I think it is so subtle as to be almost subversive. "Love defies all logic" the poet says, and then logically intersects words that support the logical floor plan of a building composed of illogical parts - an improbable structure, rigid in its lithesome ability withstand the body blows of third person blowhards like my esteemed colleague who started this comment.

I like the first stanza a lot - where rock rhymes with an unmentioned lock and key rhymes with me as easily as it does sea. "Pleasant simplicity" , my hind foot.

There is a line I don't like, it begins: "In truth..." I suspect statements that begin with "let me tell you the truth". I hear those words and my sphincter flashes the intrusion warning. Otherwise, I really like the poem , all three of us do, you know?

This poem fills me with love's enchantment.
In five simply elegant, heartfelt verses you convey its boundlessness and its undisputed supremacy over all else in the universe.
Kudos dear Chris!
Love is so magical, I feel it must be treated with such reverence lest it vanish like a phantom in the dark night.

Very beautiful, this one. I was reminded of First Corinthians 13: "Love never faileth." That is essentially what you have said here.

Many thanks John. Pleased you enjoyed my lines. All the best.

Chris
Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals there of are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7

After reading your poem I instantly thought of these verses.. and they actually fit quite well.

So nicely written Chris and it’s funny how the heart chooses, it’s all about timing, the right place and in the right mind.

Powerful love poem here. The romance is genuine. This is exactly what real love it....long lasting love that does not get scared off when something goes a bit off. Diamond strength indeed, Chris....the power of your words has just that. Lydi**
