Remember Them

(an old poem posted on another site and reworked)

scorched black and torched this bloodied, grieving soil

where mangled corpses sprawl in no man's land

felled by the rapid fire from gunner's blitz

brave men advancing blindly to their foe

go onwards past their brothers left in death

who sacrificed their lives who gave their all

all hell on earth as terror grips their minds

this carnage we recall brings home its stain

seared in our hearts such slaughter weeps in pain

so many years ago lest we forget

red bleeds our wounded sky in deep respect

while sinking sun hangs heavy with our shame

From a veteran I say thank you. My entire family including my mom served in different branches. It's incredibly nerve wracking to have to read the news to find out if your brother is still alive after weeks of hearing zero. You did an amazing job of capturing the emotional sacrifice of our forgotten heroes Chris.

So many tears have been shed over bloodies dead corpses; so much pain has reared its head because of this. It is our duty to remember these brave souls and to honor those who gave their lives. very strong emotional piece. a sad commentary on war but a wonderful tribute to those who fought and gave the ultimate sacrifice. someone once said that there should be a rule of war that you can't kill someone until you get to know them first. well said and well penned chris ... :)

A lovely poem, Christine, and just in time for Remembrance day, i presume? I saw your Queen placing a wreath just recently, so I assume that is the occasion. The Great War was a terrible war and the carnage and sacrifice was truly horrific. We must always remember those who gave up their lives for freedom from evil. With poetry like this, they are never forgotten. 💛

War is nothing but devastation personified. Loss of life only at the cost of ego of supremacy. War is shameful, derogatory. But the lives that lost on the battle field... Should not be forgotten. The respect we can show to them by not forgetting their sacrifices
