Room With A View

Room With A View

A Poem by Chris Shaw

sunrise stretches a broad canvas
visible through pristine plate glass
doors that slide open on to a top
floor balcony

slate grey brooding sky mountains
form continents with islands
blending with smooth set apricot
splashes

to form perfect cloud harbours
without a single sail boat in sight
of early morning stillness in half
baked autumn light

a flash of thickened mango crush
adds a tincture of deeper hue
in a sky absent of an ounce of
ocean blue

a hint of gun metal shows two
dolphins taking a leap in imaginary
waters, leaping for joy like children
with a favourite toy

while reality puts seagulls in flight
centre stage in my living art,
entering this frame and departing
in fleeting moments

I consider myself extremly blessed that I can see these views from each of my windows. but I couldn't write about them so well. I find this a very moving and musical piece.
PS I realise that this is not Scotland you describe. And I love your descriptions of colour.

I think there are times when writers see things in their own minds and forget there's an audience reading that wants to see what the writer sees. In this case, you show the audience spendidly. You describe the colors as if a blind person were next to you with a desire to know what you see. Great writing here, Chris.

dearest Chris... a pleasure to read your Gallery of poetry.
Fascinating that we share the same Earth and Moon as well as Sun.
The Sky is often painted in Colors and Images that bring Dreams to mind.
There are always signs of rain or a storm... at times there are no clouds...
and then other times Grey storm clouds loom with streaks of lightening and
thunder rolls across the sky. Autumn skies with sunshine and falling leaves of
mellow Wine. Your poetry is full of imagination for young and older folks.
Be blessed. gently, Pat

Chris
such a moving read for me .. opening line and verse put my feet directly in front of that .. stretched canvas sunrise .. the apricot and mango tastings deliciously placed says i! you created such a beautiful moment entirely out of clouds and darkened sky .. the top floor balcony for me is way up there .. a 20th floor view .. love it! well done! thanks for sharing Chris!

"my living art." ...a perfect description of your writings.
And this, another feast for the senses, always in motion, sprinkled with gems, your "sky mountains & cloud harbors & half baked autumn light."

Chris -you've taken me to a magnificent vista. I can see the scenes as though portrayed on a giant screen t.v. All the glorious colors and even the sounds are easy to come by. I really enjoyed this - thank you.

You are truly a painter and a magnificent one! this is so serene, so calming and so dreamy, like a soft breeze on the morning, the last verse says what I was feeling, a beautiful fleeting moments filled with tranquility and peace. Wonderful dear Chris.

Excellent Word Pictures Chris, stretching our imaginations and inviting readers to respond with their own perceptions. Autumn seems to be a favourite time of yours, with its bittersweet nuances, and dual senses of hope and incipient loss.
Shades of the great Romantic Poets and most interestingly I think David Hockney in his younger days.
