Winging It

Winging It

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Quote from a birthday card:" May the bluebird of happiness crap all over your birthday cake" And I started to laugh and couldn't stop.

"
a bluebird of plastic
happiness swings on its perch
suspended from a wooden
beam on our garden deck

not a note comes out
of its tiny throat
though i am full of song

not a sign that this fragile
avian toy is full of the joys
of spring, though i'm
winging it

and certainly its faded
paint plumage doesn't bode
well for future prosperity
though i consider myself
wealthy

as for good luck, you can
chuck that out of a window
none of us can croak about
that these days

instead we have to make the
most of what we've got
and drop the negatives

happiness comes in small
parcels, learn to grow
your own

Ha a nice tongue in cheek little advice poem. I have to say having had to go scrub my path a few hours ago to remove pigeon poo I am avian a bad day lol! My fault because I have many bird feeders and keep them topped up. Nice little spontaneous number. We also have a metal bird in a cage swinging in the breeze.

Thank you Cyprian. I appreciate your visit and thoughts.

First I read about the birthday card and almost choked on my tea, hilarious! But the message in this poem is current and so important; happiness is something you create and not something you have. And in these trying times it's true that "we have to make the most of what we've got and drop the negatives". Lovely writing!

This poem feels like two opposing forces . . . the narrator, a sarcastic & negative old cuss, professes that we needn't succumb to acting like sarcastic & negative old cusses. Nicely presented juxtaposition! Amazingly you've captured the precise bittersweet attitude I've adopted to survive & keep my good humor intact: I'm so jaded as to the outcome of this stretch of history, but the whole mashup feels funny in its exaggerated absurdity. I'm more curious to see what other unprecedented shoe could possibly drop next, more than being concerned about the clustered conundrum the world is currently in! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

"unprecedented" became a meaningless overused word about 3 months into Trump's presidency, by the way . . . now we're almost 4 years in & the whole absurdity isn't worth reacting to anymore!

Yes, indeed. All of us need to learn to grow our own happiness. Your thoughts are always food for the soul.
