Free Spirit

Free Spirit

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

Inspired by Little Hermaid's Chocolate Cosmos. Thank you poet for both your lovely poem and the inspiration.

"
attempt to cage a free spirit
it will surely defy you
some refuse to be grounded
however diligently you try

fall in love with one of these
it's you who will sink to your knees
be prepared for i have spoken
broken hearts are a token left
in the wake of one born with the
gift of flight

the only home they know
is in the realms of a never
ending sky at night where they
wander at their own cosmic pace
in their own time and in the vastness
of their own space

the kindest gift on them you can
bestow, is to break the silken
threads of dreams, detach
release, its over, let them slip
away, let them go

My large childhood family, traditional & buttoned-up, used to call me "free spirit" becuz I didn't go in for their conventional ways. I was transported by your words to that mindset of being utterly free from fretting over whatever others might expect. It's only gotten more pronounced over the years for me! Thanks for painting it with all the intensity of how it feels to live this way (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Beautiful poem, Chris.
You cannot tether yourself to a free spirit. They're not meant to be tied down. :)

"Free Spirits" love and leave. Your poem makes me think of Lord Byron, a notorious bed jumper. Spent his brief life dallying and dumping, while finding time to write some great poetry. Who knows what drives this type?

Love the ethereal, haunting nature of this with a backdrop of ominous and inevitable failure to tame such a person who is indeed defiant and free.
