Carelessly Wet

Carelessly Wet

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(a fun piece about a boring chore, pleased to say it is now dancing in the wind)

"
look at yesterday's laundry
limp lethargic and totally lifeless
soaked to its thin saturated skin
.
looking disheveled droopy
hanging by pegs on a rotary line
dripping with drenched wetness
.
it couldn't get any wetter
i couldn't have made a better job
of ensuring so if i'd tried
.
there it is crying its eyes out
left out excluded in pouring rain
suffering indignity not so much pain
.
all because i lost the plot
forgot to bring it inside when
my carelessness cast it aside
.

Since we don't get a drop of rain for 8 months out of the year, I actually didn't read this as being "laundry in the rain" for the first half! I just thought you didn't wring your laundry out very much! But then I remembered how someone from the UK responded to my fire announcements by saying you folks were drowning in rain! Your power of observation in all your poems is top-notch & then you turn that into lively original descriptions about everyday relatable stuff! Amazing! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Most of us ... shall I say more experienced people ... have been acquainted with laundry flapping in the breeze ... or run a hand through the wringer by accident. For some reason I always liked the smell of a soapy wringer washer and the swish swish of the agitator. Pulling the wet clothes off the line in a rainstorm was another question. But better than frozen solid on a winter's morning ... probably why Mum always liked her dryer.

Frozan solid on a winter's day sounds so much worse. Thanks Ted for checking this one out.

Wow. Clothes can cry too. Especially if left outside in the rain. Wet they were already and now dripping and weeping. Devoid of their buoyancy and their brightness. Happily, that too did pass and now they're fluttering, flapping and dancing in the wind. Delightful!

Well at least it isn't snowing Chris and the shirt is pointing to something in the distance and looks like its trying to escape.
Such a heavy sigh as you realise too late that you have to wash your wet washing again because it got wet. We are a strange lot, aren't we? 😀

Ha ha. Doesn't it just vary :)
Loved this piece! Such colorful language- and such a wonderful use of anthropomorphism with the line "there it is crying its eyes out". Your incredible diction definitely shines through on this one.

Laundry abuse--a tragedy rarely brought to light.
Terrorizing towels and slandering sheets are not activities in which upstanding women
should involve themselves.
No wonder so many socks go missing!
